Developmental Support Worker (DSW) - Strong Swimming skills required

Location: Burlington, ON
Pay Rate: $25.00/hour
Schedule: Mon & Wed (11:00 am to 4:00 pm)

Job Overview

We are seeking a compassionate, dedicated, and strong-swimming Developmental Support Worker (DSW) to provide direct support to individuals with developmental disabilities, autism, mental illness, and/or dual diagnoses.

The successful candidate will support residents with their daily needs, promote independence and community participation, and help create a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment.

IMPORTANT: STRONG SWIMMING ABILITY IS REQUIRED

Candidates must be strong, confident, and capable swimmers. Swimming is an essential part of this position, and the successful candidate must be able to safely support and supervise residents during swimming and aquatic activities.

Candidates who are not strong swimmers will not be considered for this position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs) and provide person-centred support.
  • Assist residents with activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, nutrition, medication support, and other personal care needs.
  • Promote independence, inclusion, choice, and self-determination.
  • Support communication and self-expression using appropriate communication methods.
  • Facilitate social, recreational, educational, and community-based activities.
  • Safely support and supervise residents during swimming and aquatic activities.
  • Participate in water-based recreational activities and ensure resident safety in and around aquatic environments.
  • Apply behavioural techniques and crisis intervention strategies in accordance with established plans and organizational policies.
  • Work collaboratively with residents, families, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Accurately document resident progress, incidents, behaviours, and other relevant information.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, respectful, and welcoming residential environment.
  • Transport residents safely when required and in accordance with organizational policies.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary Developmental Services Worker (DSW) Diploma/Certificate or equivalent.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working in residential treatment, social services, or a related setting with individuals with developmental disabilities, autism, mental illness, and/or dual diagnoses.
  • Strong and confident swimming ability – MANDATORY.
  • Ability to confidently and safely participate in swimming and aquatic activities with residents.
  • Current Standard First Aid & CPR Level C certification.
  • Current Safe Management / Enhanced SMG certification.
  • Valid G-Class Driver’s Licence and appropriate vehicle insurance.
  • Acceptable Criminal Background Check / Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency.

Physical & Work Requirements

  • Excellent swimming skills and confidence in the water.
  • Physically capable of assisting residents with daily activities and mobility needs.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs where required.
  • Ability to kneel, bend, stand, walk, and participate in physical interventions when necessary and properly trained.
  • Must be physically capable of safely supporting residents during swimming and aquatic activities.
  • Must be comfortable working in and around swimming pools and other aquatic environments.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
